Welcome to Moonset.online, the #1 fansite for cult classic 2000s light novel series Moonset!

Okay, just kidding. Moonset is my personal passion project: a slipstream genre magical girl romance thriller novel, published online as a serial. Both the story and the website are maintained almost-single handedly, with support from one editor, one artist, and one musician, plus support from ~a dozen other dear friends. This site serves both a side-project to indulge in my aethetic interests, and as a repository for everything relating to the production of the work. Here you will not only be able to read the story, but also see me document my thoughts during my creative process, look through commentaries on my inspirations, and - I hope- find a community of like-minded people to enjoy yourself with.

The center of Moonset are Tsukiko and Ririka: two mysterious, codependent, astrology-obsessed girls who are enmeshed in a chain of mysteries with answers which threaten the balance of the magic-stained world they call home. Transforming into the masked warriors Foxfire and The Whispering Stars, they use their magics and wits to prevail against both others like them and forces beyond comprehension, even at the risk of their own self-destruction.

A new chapter of the story is posted every two Mondays, avaliable both here and on RoyalRoad. In antiquity, authors would usually publish their books in chunks via a feature in a magazine publication; even very famous books like Great Expectations and The Count of Monte Cristo were originally released this way! When the modern publishing industry arose, this practice became almost entirely obsolete. Thanks to the internet, however, it has started to see a resurgance. While becoming popular in some countries, web serials in the west are still usually relegated to fanworks or specific niche subgenres, but I see the format as having immense potential to take off again as we enter a new era of creative freedom and rebellion.

The decision to center the project around a small, hand-made personal website in the style of "web 1.0" rather than a page on a popular social media platform is likewise an act of counter-culture against a commercialised, censorship-happy, exploitative mainstream. The current pressures of late-stage capitalism feel immense, but it is my view that these are merely dying screams, and the time has come for people to reclaim the internet as a tool of self-expression and community, rather a giant advertising-slash-propaganda scheme.

Moonset blends together many things I love, include cool fight scenes with weird superpowers; deeply wound mysteries with and conspiracies with troubling implcations; sappy, emotionally complicated queer romances; pretty people in cool alt outfits; star imagery; and 2000s-esque emo aesthetics. Hopefully there's something in there you're passionate about too! Be advised that there's also a lot of discussion of sensitive content in the story - especially things related to trauma and emotional well-being; I will make sure to leave an extra warning if a chapter is particularly heavy, but reader descretion is always advised.

I love interacting with readers and hearing people's thoughts on my characters and stories, so not only can you comment on every chapter right on the site, we even have a full, old-style forum page where you can post anything you have to say! Moonset is fully free to read and always will be, if only because it'd be hypocritical of me to demand people pay for it. If you find Moonset makes you so happy that you'd like to put some money my way, though, there will be a donation system set up where you can "pay" whatever you'd like for any or all chapters. In the future I'd also like to look into a dedicated merch store, and perhaps a Patreon where you can donate in exchange for early chapters or bonus short stories.

The world is terrifying in a lot of ways, but nothing can stop humanity, and hope, and the stars. Let this Moonset always remind you of that.
